February 22, 1904: The first organizational meeting of The University Club of Washington, DC takes place at the newly reopened Willard Hotel. Sixty-six university and college alumni gather to form the Club, following the establishment of similar clubs in 24 other cities.
March 11, 1904: The first President of The University Club is elected – William Howard Taft, then Secretary of War and an active Club member. The Club developed a most appropriate theme: "Enter all of ye who have a degree of good fellowship and learning."
1904: The Club's first clubhouse is located at 1726 I Street, NW. Later that year, the Club moved into its new quarters, a brownstone at 930 Sixteenth Street, NW.
1907: The University Club's membership grows, and 364 members attend the annual banquet at the Raleigh Hotel.
1909: Land is purchased at 15th and I Streets, NW for the construction of a larger facility due to growing membership. The construction costs are raised from the sale of shares.
1912: Former Club President and then-President of the United States, William Howard Taft, lays the cornerstone for the new clubhouse.
1921: The Racquet Club of Washington dedicates its facility at 1135 Sixteenth Street, with General "Black Jack" Pershing officiating. The University Club members join the Racquet Club members in their Clubhouse.
1936: The University Club members adopt a new name, becoming The University Club of the City of Washington, DC, and share the clubhouse with the Racquet Club.
1940's: The Club flourishes during World War II as Washington, DC transforms into a major world capital.
1980's: Women are admitted as members, leading to renovations and the establishment of The University Club Foundation. The Club's facilities undergo extensive improvements.
1990's: The Club undergoes further renovations to enhance its facilities and services, including upgrades to guest rooms, Library, entryway, and more.
September 2003: The Second Century Plan, a $4.4 million construction project, is completed. It upgrades member services, fitness center, private day spa, locker rooms, sports lounge, and infrastructure.
February 2004: The University Club of Washington, D.C., celebrates its 100th anniversary
2021 - Present Day: Throughout its history, The University Club has experienced growth, challenges, renovations, and transformations while upholding its tradition of warm fellowship, fine dining, intellectual pursuits, and athletics in the heart of the nation's capital. The Club maintains its award-winning reputation as a Platinum Club of America and Distinguished Emerald Club of the World.
